A Day in My Life: Post 26 for Rave Reviews Book Club: From Consistent Writing to Consistent Exercise and... YIKES!

Hello everyone! All the non-science people who landed on my blog today will be happy to know that this post has nothing to do with geometry and genetics. Instead, I’m going to get into normal, everyday stuff – starting with the fact that I joined a gym. To be honest, I’m feeling more than a little intimidated about this. Secondly, I have a hair appointment next week. Since I’m utterly terrified about getting my hair done, let’s start with what'll likely be at least somewhat physically painful: the gym.

My Trip to the Gym

I guess you might say that the wise old owl in me, (one of my spirit animals) knew better than to try establishing a workout routine on top of a writing routine. This is why I intentionally waited to make an appointment with one of the local gyms until this blog challenge was nearing its end.  Sometimes I amaze myself at how much common sense I have. Frankly, I really do need to tap into it a lot more often.  : )

With my gym appointment in hand, I went in today and spoke with a handsome and physically fit, young man. Right away, I felt a little out of sorts because it’s been since 2019 that I’ve routinely worked out. Back then, I started an exercise routine and saw some amazing results. Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic as well as a cross-county move, quickly put an end to fitting into my skinny jeans.

Once I left New York and settled into Arizona, working out took a back seat after I realized just how much my mom needed my help. She told me that some extended family members had taken advantage of her – even going so far as to break into her financial accounts. I was angry to find this out. I was also heartbroken. The sad truth, as I’ve since discovered, is that many elderly people endure this kind of cruelty. They are often taken advantage of by strangers on the phone. Even worse, people nearest to them sometimes steal jewelry, cash, bottles of alcohol and documents. Additionally, once an older person gives up driving, cars often end up disappearing, or are only partially paid for by family members or neighbors. Fortunately, my mom spoke up about what was going on, and I’ve been able to help her with this as well as a variety of medically related issues.

As for the gym itself, once I arrived today, I was glad that I shared what has been happening over the last couple of years. As it turned out, the young man with whom I had the appointment, completely understood just how hard it is to be a caregiver to an older parent. That’s because he himself had experienced this! Right away, I felt my shoulders relax. We finished our discussion, and he showed me around the facility, making sure to introduce me to his staff along the way. Each time, I flashed a friendly smile and reiterated that I’m likely to need their help – at least in the beginning.

Luckily, I saw other beginners in the facility as well. Knowing me, as much as I adore people, I’ll probably makes lots of new friends in no time. As for any muscle aches, what's there to worry about? The way I look at it is, exercising will give me a great excuse to get a massage every now and then.  : )
What's my next hair color going to be?
My Hair Conundrum

The second “normal life” thing that’s happening is that I have a hair appointment. No big deal, right? Wrong – at least for me. That's because, instead of potentially experiencing physical pain, I'm anticipating a certain degree of psychological discomfort. The reason I’m so nervous about this is because I’m tired of fighting my gray hair. Actually, my natural hair is more of a tinsel silver, so every time it grows out, I’m left with what I refer to as a skunk stripe on top of my head. Since my hair grows quickly, it’s hard to maintain my brunette color. As a result, I’ve decided it’s time for me to make yet another change – this time to my hair color. I’m not sure how this is going to turn out, but I’m leaning towards incorporating highlights and low lights (brown, silver and blonde). Or perhaps just moving toward an ash blonde/light brown color. Whatever I do, I want to be able to wear either gold or silver jewelry. I’m also considering my skin tone and the colors of clothing I wear most often. The images above are the shades I’m presently considering (although the picture on the right is probably too warm-toned for me).  If anyone reading this post has experience with moving from darker to lighter hair due to turning gray, I'm ALL EARS!

As always, thank you for taking the time to stop by and read my blog. Again, if you have any advice regarding my hair situation, please leave a comment below...I can't tell you how much I appreciate your thoughts! Same goes for resuming a gym routine.

Wishing you love and light,
Donna M. Atwood

I quit the gym during COVID and haven't returned. I created a little gym in my house and walk the neighborhood, and it works for me because it saves me the to and fro of driving, but I'm not a social butterfly and prefer solitude when I work out. Still, kudos to you for getting back to that routine!

As for the hair color, my sister is in her 40s, and she has decided to just let the gray grow out. She has tinsels of gray scattered throughout her hair, and she doesn't care. I, on the other hand, dye my roots every 5-6 weeks, but I also dye sections of the bottoms of my hair blue (after they bleach it every six months). I can tell you that dark hair does not go platinum very well the first few times. Our hair turns a tinge of yellow when it's bleached, and if they bleach it too much, it will become brittle and break. I've never gone platinum or blonde, but you may want to go with an expert who will be honest with you about what your hair can and cannot do in one sitting. My lady has been doing my hair for almost 20 years, and she is very careful about how long she leaves the bleach on my hair. That's just my two cents. I hope you will post a picture of what you decide to do, Donna!

Hi Yvette! Yes, I agree with what you're saying; I think this will take several sittings at the salon. The last thing I want the stylist to do is to damage my hair, so slow and steady is perfectly fine. Besides, too much change at once will probably freak me out! Best wishes, Donna

Hi Donna--I quit going to the gym during the pandemic and haven't gone back, either. I have a little thing at home called a Cubii, which is kind of a sit down elliptical machine. It's really neat. I can use it while I'm watching Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune with my husband every night.

As for the hair color--I had been dying my hair for a long time, and, right after the pandemic, I decided to let it grow out. My hair was usually light brown. It's grown out to be tinged with silver as opposed to full-blown gray or silver. My hairdresser says that she has a bunch of clients who want her to color their hair to look like mine! It's almost as if my hair has highlights in it as opposed to being dyed any more. I will admit, I feel as if I look older, but it's more natural. I got the chemicals out of my hair.

My hair conundrum is whether to let it keep growing a little. It's at one of those mid-range lengths where I almost can't stand it any more. Ah, these little things that drive us crazy!

Hi Wanda! I've never heard of the Cubii before, I need to check that out! As for your natural highlights, what you're describing is all the rage! Lord knows I'm probably going to spend a fortune to achieve what you have naturally. You're a lucky lady! Best wishes, Donna : )

Wanda, good luck at the gym! I went for awhile about a thousand years ago, but now just ride my exercise bike. One thing about a membership, tho - it will cause you to keep going to justify the cost. So that's a plus! As for hair - the silver streak sounds nice, couldn't you keep it and maybe add a few more? A streak is better than "salt and pepper" so maybe just own it and play it up!

Thank you, Maura Beth! Yes, I will have to go to the gym because I'm working with a personal trainer, so, I guess there's no getting out of it. Lol! My hair is basically totally silver at this point. I supposed I could own it, but I'm not psychologically ready just yet. My daughter doesn't sound too excited about me doing anything but keeping it brown. At this point, I don't know what I'm going to do. Thank you very much for your words of encouragement. Getting older is hard, at least in some ways! Lol! Best wishes, Donna : )

Hi, Donna. The less I say about the gym, the better. Enjoy it, and keep it up!

As for the hair, for some reason I'm partial to the multi-colored hair on the left. A young friend of mine had hers bleached white and added black tips to a pixie cut. It was gorgeous! My mom had a natural silver stripe in her dark hair since her thirties. She wanted to color it, but her five young'uns protested LOUDLY, and she kept the streak. Unique and beautiful. Since my blue phase, I've gone natural, which includes a generous dusting of gray. Amazingly, I've also retained much of my original color, and I'm into my seventh decade. All this to say that whatever you do, if you love it, enjoy it. If you hate it, change it. Hair is easy that way.

Hi Patty...oh my goodness, you're right! I can always change it! In my mind, this has been a forever type of thing. If I hate my new color, I can always go back. Thank you for reminding me!!! By the way, the fact that you have a lot of your original color is amazing. My boyfriend is in his 70s and he's the same way. Oh well, this is a new adventure. Thanks, Patty! Best wishes, Donna : )

I've been fighting gray since my twenties. The shock of my brother's car accident and his two-year coma gave me my first gray hair at age 23. In my thirties and forties, I was able to pull them out. Then came the endless battle. Now, two weeks after coloring, they pop out. I tried going lighter, but the lighter color didn't cover my gray. I've gone back to my medium brown. Since Covid began, I've been coloring at home, but the grays appear too quickly even for a salon. I hope your multi-color look works better. Good luck!

Hi Susanne! You and I have had a similar hair story. I was 27 when I saw my first three gray strands. In my late 30s or so, I had to begin regular coloring (well, I chose to). I went blonde for a short while in my forties, but it was too yellow and looked awful. Now I'm being very selective. A major change like light blonde, silver and brown lowlights may take awhile to perfect. My daughter seems to think I should stay brown, but I can't keep up with it. My hair, like yours, grows very quickly. All I can say is please pray for me. Lol!!!
Best wishes, Donna : )

    About My Encounters
    By D. M. Atwood

"More than anything, I want to connect with others who've been through extraterrestrial, UFO or paranormal  encounters. Such events leave you with so many unanswered questions...but often, that's just the beginning. What I mean is, some folks, like myself, go through bizarre things afterwards. For me, a fifty minute encounter with a large, luminous orb marked the beginning of a complete and total spiritual transformation. Honestly, what I've been through has been beyond difficult, yet it's been magical and mystical and has opened doors and opportunities for me that I never would've thought possible. Strange as it may sound, I'm truly grateful for my experiences because I now know we're not alone. To feel as connected to the universe as I do is an incredible gift. I now see life completely differently and I'm much happier for it."
